The Importance of Link popularity

Gaining high link popularity is perhaps the single most important factor when trying to reach the top page on the major search engines. It appears all the large SE’s are using link popularity as a way of calculating the importance of a page, thus giving it a higher rank.

Some people in the SEO business argue that link popularity is widely overrated, and are instead claiming the relevance of the link to be of much more importance when calculating the final SE position. According to this theory, a few links from highly relevant pages would mean much more than many links from pages with lower relevance to your website.

Other SEO theorists argue link popularity to be the single most important factor, and are often using nothing but the anchor text (the word or phrase actually linked) to target their keywords and phrases. According to this theory, one could reach a high SE position by a massive amount of links with keyword rich anchor texts.

Using any of these techniques will surely raise both your link popularity, and your SE position, but I see little reason not to go both ways. If getting many links would improve your ranks, and a few relevant would as well – getting them all would surely improve your ranks even further.

Link popularity, and links of lower relevance, can serve as a major source of search engine traffic for some – often larger – sites. A large site is bound to have quite a few topics, and even more possible phrases people could use to find them. With many links, your will have some words or phrases targeted by accident, bringing you more of those precious visitors. Generally, the more subjects you cover, the better you will serve from high link popularity, even though all sites benefit from more backlinks. Be sure to use keyword rich anchor text, as that’s your only way of targeting specific words.

Using only a few relevant links will naturally only boost the SE positions for words and phrases used on those pages, preferably near your link. If you instead are building mini- or micro sites, targeting only one, or a few specific keywords, relevance would be a much faster way to improve your ranks for those searches. A few articles containing your keywords, along with a few good links, might be enough to get you on top for non competitive search terms. For more lucrative areas, you will need to work harder.

Getting relevant links tend to much more time consuming, as this often is done manually. Searching the web for potential link partners tends to take some time, but done correctly, it’s a powerful way of marketing your site. Finding links of low, or no relevance can be done in a much faster manner, but the amount of links needed is much higher. Depending on niche, size of site and other factors, choosing one way or the other might work; but using both methods will get you higher positions in every major search engine.

Link Popularity – Wrong Approach to a Right Strategy

No wonder many of us count link popularity as a game of numbers. As wining the game is directly proportionate to greater number, similarly getting back links from number of sites is a good solution to rank high in the search engines. Number matters the most, is it really true?

Most of us evaluate the popularity through search engine results so we must look on back links of the top ten sites. Now what’s the result? Do they have large number of back links? After the great inspection you must get a no, but then suddenly, a big question will arise in your mind – “What’s the factor behind the high ranking of these sites?” Do they have different strategies or they follow the same differently? Yes, now you have reached the solution through your question itself. They follow the same strategy that is Link Popularity however their approach towards it is different. They choose those sites for link building that have most relevant content, high PR (page rank), and quality links. In other words, their back links come from trusted and relevant sites and this is the funda of their success of link popularity.

To carry a bunch of incoming link will not ensure your site’s top ranking. Back linking can help immensely if you link to the site ranked high in search engine. Spreading links over number of sites through article submission and social networking sites (blogs and forums) can also improve your link popularity in organic way. However it requires good content with high quality, relevant information and unique and eye catching presentation. If your content is full of these attributes, your link will definitely get weight age over others. But remember, for making it possible, you must have good content and present it in a good manner too.

Reciprocal Linking is also one of the ways to make your site popular and get large number of web traffic. Search engines do not count on this kind of linking, as it consider under the mutual partnership, but still it is in use because it divert the most classified customers towards your site. This technique of link building is equally important, as the end goal is getting targeted customers and goal conversion as well.

From SEO perspective it is worthless to waste your valuable time and effort in increasing the number of links. It’s better to focus on getting quality links form quality sites instead of getting quantity links form irrelevant and wrong sites.

Why is Link Popularity Important?

Link popularity measures the total number of web pages that links to your website. It is important because search engines’ ranking criteria gives some weight to the number and quality of inbound links that a website receives. Quality of inbound links are more important than quantity because by quality inbound links we mean links from high traffic websites.

Article directories

To achieve link popularity, your website needs exposure. Write articles and submit them to article directories. Article directories are websites that host thousands of articles on diversified topics. One important aspect of article writing is that the article must be free from any sale pitches. It should give good and useful information to the reader and must not be seen as only trying to sell the good aspects of your product. Inbound links are made possible and generated by writing articles as the article can be signed off with an anchor text link back to the author’s (which is you) website.

Deceptive methods of achieving link popularity

There are various methods of fraudulently trying to receive more backlinks to your site. One common technique is the buying of links. This is a black-hat SEO technique and a website found to be doing this may be penalized or banned indefinitely. Backlinks should be achieved via good and informative content and not through pay others to link to us. Link farms is another form of deceptive links. Link farms are groups of websites that link to each other. Reciprocal links are links between two websites whereby both of them mutually link to each other. Building links is important and acceptable provided it is done in an ethical way. For example, registering for pay-per-click advertising is also paying for links but it is a form of advertising which is an acceptable and legitimate way of selling our product.

Participate as an information giver

The Internet is about information, information and information. A white-hat SEO technique is to actively participate in giving useful information. Involve in discussions at Google Groups, give answers at Yahoo! Answers, participate in Squidoo (a popular publishing platform), to name a few. These are large communities where you can proactively be a giver of useful information in return for inbound links back to your website.

A word about outbound links

Your web pages should have outbound links too. Though it does not count towards the link popularity of your web page, outbound links (where your site links to other sites) direct your site’s visitors to other useful sites containing good useful content. Be selective in giving out outbound links and it will in return give your site the impression that you have good content because you are linking to other sites containing good content too.
